Peer Support Specialist Internship
Our Peer Support Specialist Internship is an unpaid, six-month long internship that provides the opportunity to work as a staff team member in providing support for LGBTQ clients. This is a chance for the Peer Specialist to build relevant experience for their resumes by working directly with clients. Interns will receive weekly supervision from a Peer Support Specialist who has completed the Washington State Certified Peer Counselor Training and will participate in all team consultations. Additionally, Peer Support Specialist Interns will:
- Develop and facilitate a support group for SCS clients that will focus on building coping skills for specific mental health symptoms
- Work one on one with clients to help them identify strengths, decide on goals and objectives and learn life skills (such as learning how to use the bus system)
- Apply peer support services and crisis coverage in person as well as over the phone
Prospective Peer Support Specialist Interns must have completed the Washington State Peer Counselor Training and have passed the exam provided by the Washington Institute for Mental Health Research and Training. Specialists must also demonstrate knowledge of and advocacy for the LGBTQ community and be willing to further their understanding of our community.
